General Wheeler dies at 67 after stroke in West Virginia
Retired Army General Earle G. Wheeler former Joint Chiefs chair died at 4:25 p.m. after a stroke at a Frederick hospital. he had suffered a cardiac arrest earlier and was moved from Martinsburg to Walter Reed before condition worsened. Wheeler, a 1932 West Point graduate, led the JCS from 1964 through a six year tenure tied to Johnson and Nixon era Vietnam policy. He had long military service including WWII roles and later served as Monsanto director after retiring in 1970. He was married to Frances Rogers Howell and had one son.

Former Illinois Governor Otto Kerner, released for health reasons after bribery fraud and tax evasion sentences, was denied an early pardon. Deputy AG Harold Tyler Jr refused waiving the five year waiting period, meaning Kerner must wait until March 6 1980 to apply, with usual three year rule extended for serious crimes.
