The Las Vegas Convention Authority voted to hire an architect in January to draft preliminary plans for a 2 million county stadium. A building committee will review firms, aiming to partner with a stadium planner. Clark County School District offered a 320 acre site near Paradise Valley Vocational School.
The Regional Street and Highway Commission and its Technical Committee meet in City Hall to approve a Russell Road from Paradise to Maple contract. The Technical Committee convenes at 8 15 a.m. followed by the full commission at 8 30 a.m. Paul Laxalt says Christmas cards to all Nevadan voters are too costly and charity funds would be better used. Former Gov Grant Sawyer started the practice of sending cards to every voter, which Laxalt ended in office.
The Las Vegas Sun announces its editorial leadership and staff roles with H. M. Greenspun as editor and publisher and Bryn Armstrong as executive editor. It lists executives, editors, and managers, including circulation, sales, and payroll contacts. It notes postal status, advertising reps, professional associations, and subscription rates.
James Lee Harvey 23 of 4529 Amhurst Lane was arraigned in Justice Court for a second time on marijuana related charges after being arrested July 2 at the 7-Eleven Food Store on Las Verdes Street where he worked as a clerk. He waived the preliminary hearing then pled guilty to a reduced charge, withdrew the plea, and the district attorney refiled charges. A preliminary hearing is set for May 6.
A series of holiday robberies occurred over the weekend. Hugo Grassel reports a gunman delivered a wrapped package and demanded money, with a second robber looting Grassel’s home for 440 dollars. Cecil Green and William Scott were robbed of 27 dollars. A Yellow Cab driver, Gerald Hinds, challenged two gunmen in his back seat and the suspects fled in a following car.
Confab Bureau eyes a $500000 capital project at its first 1969 meeting. Chairman Oran Grayson and architect Jack Miller review plans for a 360 foot partition and eight meeting rooms in the Desert Inn Road complex. Total cost could rise to about $2.5 million, funded from surplus revenues after bond issues failed twice.
Darwin Lamb chairs a 1:15 p.m. ribbon cutting to dedicate the expanded four lane Nellis Boulevard linking Henderson to the base. The ceremony at the Nellis base end features county officials and a luncheon at the officers club with Henderson and Boulder City mayors and base representatives.
