AEC Office Chooses Joint Bid for Dribble Project Shaft

The Atomic Energy Commission Nevada Operations Office selects Camay Drilling Company of Los Angeles and Patrick Harrison, Inc. of Golden, Colorado, to negotiate a contract for constructing two shafts and a 95 foot diameter cavity near Hattiesburg Mississippi for the Vela Uniform underground detonation tests. The plan calls for drilling two shafts about 2000 feet deep and a 95-foot cavity for a nuclear device, with total costs over 2 million dollars. A vertical shaft and an inclined raise will transport salt to the surface for storage, while a second access shaft provides ventilation. Three 100-ton detonations are proposed, pending final authorization, to study signal decoupling under seismic conditions.
