ACLU challenges legal aid plan over protest advice ban
The ACLU filed a federal suit in Washington challenging a Legal Services Corp rule that bars a legal services lawyer from advising or participating in protests. The case, on behalf of Chemung County Welfare Rights Org in Elmira, argues free speech rights and organizational rights are violated. The protest ban is seen as intended to deter demonstrations by the poor using legal aid. The suit seeks a ruling on creating a three judge court to hear the issue. The filing names the City of Charlotte in a separate note referencing Queen Charlotte of England.
