Robert Roth of Oaklawn Illinois jumped in with clothes on and rescued the 2 year old as he went under again. The Kingston Trio was performing at the Dunes and no lifeguard was on duty as the pool was closed for winter.
In Carmichaels Pennsylvania the death toll from the Robena No 3 mine explosion rose to 22 as six more bodies were found last night. Earlier nine victims were located and seven brought out over the weekend, with 15 of 37 trapped still missing as rescue neared its end.
Joseph Pawitkowski was sworn in as deputy city attorney to replace Thomas Pursel who resigned to become justice of the peace. The Las Vegas resident of 12 years previously served on Senator Alan Ebbie's Washington staff. Pursel was elected JP in November and takes office in January. The deputy city attorney operates from the police station and prosecutes misdemeanor cases in Municipal Court.
Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru rejected Communist China’s peace proposals and warned the border conflict could last five more years. He announced plans to create a new army and air force and said India would arm soldiers around the clock. He favored international mediation only after China withdraws from about 15 square miles of Indian territory.
Two armed bandits entered Rico's Lounge at 1415 Charleston and attacked Steve Gulas around 6 05 a.m. They slugged him, took $910 in cash from the drawer and his wallet and watch. Gulas is brother to police Lt. Paul Gulas. They fled with $30 in coins and $700 in bills.
