East German Major Escapes With Family to West Berlin
An East German army major led his family and two friends past a triple barrier to seek sanctuary in Berlin's American Sector at dawn. He is among the highest ranking officers to flee since the Berlin Wall’s construction. The group was hospitalized for exposure and questioned by American officials. The top prior escapee was Lt. Col. Martin H Loeffler, who fled in September.
