White Sands Blast Probes Sound Tunnels From Historic Echo
A 5000 pound blast at White Sands missile range demonstrated sound travels through atmospheric ducts. Researchers tracked the event from Albuquerque with tape recorders, confirming a “zone of silence” 90 miles long during Queen Victoria’s funeral and extending to about 200 miles for the 1950s test. The infrasonic sound traveled at one mile every five seconds, taking five minutes to reach microphones in a lab northwest of Albuquerque.
