EPA says car converters not a fire risk under proper engine care
The EPA stated that catalytic converters pose no fire hazard for cars or vegetation if engines are maintained. Misfiring sparkplugs or ignition faults could raise converter temps above 1200 degrees, risking fires. Tests show typical converter heat around 500 degrees at 30 or 60 mph, with few reported fires linked to converters.
