Two Las Vegas couples were driven from a recreational area at Ash Springs Lincoln County by gunfire and rocks after a heated exchange with Nevada State Sen. Floyd Lamb. The SUN learned yesterday.
The murder trial of Tariq Akhtar Janjua a 26-year-old former Pakistani Air Force fighter pilot began in district court. He is charged with strangling his wife Ruth a 26-year-old beauty queen who worked as a hospital secretary last May 7 at Hughes Flight Center where he was a flight line supervisor.
The feature Inquiring Photographer asked locals if marijuana and LSD are dangerous drugs. Five respondents under 30 answered negatively triggering protests over printed opinions. A Las Vegas mother cites hair length and caps at the pool, while Dottie Price, former band singer, is noted in a tangential aside.
District Court granted a temporary restraining order against the American Federation of Teachers to stop denial of membership to Las Vegas Local 1800. A show cause hearing is set for Aug. 26 to decide on a permanent injunction. Local 1800 seeks charter return and $100,000 damages, and plans a Oct. 1 area wide membership drive alongside a clash with the Clark County Classroom Teachers Association over representation in salary talks.
The Nevada state board of finance approved Clark County School District borrowing 800000 to fund its racial integration plan in Las Vegas. Edward Greer said drastic cuts are needed if not approved. debt service on the current 1.50 tax rate would repay the loan, though some officials argued against using tax debt service. The plan aims to bus students from west Las Vegas schools and raise instructional quality in that area.
Detectives study parallels between the Sharon Tate estate killings and a second double murder in Silverlake as William Garretson is released for lack of evidence. Investigators note hooded Sebring and strangled Tate victims, a bloodied door, and a pig motif amid multiple suspects in the Los Angeles grisly case.
Financier Kirk Kerkorian acquired 1.325 million MGM shares at 35 dollars each via Tracy Investment Co. extending his Las Vegas holdings. The bid, opposed by MGM management, expired August 8 with all shares accepted pending review. He did not discuss future MGM plans.
UPI reports that Communist gunners struck 91 targets in South Vietnam over two days in their largest push in over two months. US sources say the assault marks a new offensive, with the heaviest fire since June. A North Vietnamese 82mm mortar hit a US Navy hospital ward near Da Nang, wounding 20 Americans including 12 patients.
Civilian attorney George Gregory said the South Vietnamese national slain by eight U S Green Berets was a double agent for Hanoi and the CIA. He asserted access to military files and reported Middleton Jr. faces murder conspiracy charges while authorities refuse to identify the victim. Gregory met Middleton at Long Binh after visiting the stockade.
Mr and Mrs Harvey McHenry were hit by birdshot at their campsite near Ash Spring above Alamo. They and Mr and Mrs Gil Davidson were treated and released. Lamb denied shooting but witnesses identified two armed men in the foursome who argued over use of the spring.
