Mayor Oran Gragson voiced strong dissatisfaction with a Nevada Supreme Court decision he called politically motivated. He warned the ruling would for a long time affect the financial and physical responsibilities of local government as Las Vegas faces a crisis.
The Nevada Public Service Commission authorized Air West to increase round trip fares by 2 dollars on Reno to Las Vegas flights to raise about 117509 annually. The commission found the airline not covering operating costs and noted the new rate aligns with rival prices. Billionaire Howard Hughes was granted permission to purchase the airline. Three protest letters were received, including one with 26 signatures.

The Senate narrowly extended the 10 percent income tax surcharge through year end by a 51-48 vote. Republicans said the measure falls short of Nixon’s request and House plans, while an attempt to grant a full year at a 5 percent rate failed 59-41. All 100 senators voted.
Western Airlines negotiators and union officials met in Los Angeles hoping to end a strike by 2,000 mechanics that has already sent 8,500 workers off the job and stranded Las Vegas visitors. Details of the talks were not released as Las Vegas executives questioned whether further talks would occur. Earlier layoffs reduced staff to about 1,100 workers, mainly managers and reservation clerks trying to reroute 20,000 daily passengers to other carriers.
A 21 year old Japanese man at Tokyo International Airport lunged at Secretary of State William P Rogers with a paint scraper missing his target and injuring no one. The attacker then grabbed Ambassador Armin H Meyer’s arm before police intervened. Rogers proceeded to Seoul after a six minute delay.
A string of five unmanned diesel engines rammed a parked switch engine near Keno Lane at 2 50 a m triggering a 35 minute fuel oil blaze. The switch engine engineer Arthur Chesson 54 was injured. he is in satisfactory condition. Investigators found the lead engines throttle wired forward and brakes still on.
