A Las Vegas opinion argues that tourism fueled by conventions demands smart spending. It notes Clark County has about $20 million tied up in convention hall facilities and questions an $8 million bond issue and $650,000 yearly operating cost for a venue used only 22 days annually. It warns against political boondoggling and urges public funds deliver clear benefits.
Nevada rancher and boat racing champion Bill Stead, 41, died when his midget racing plane plunged into Tampa Bay near St. Petersburg Florida during preparations for the International Aviation Exposition. Eyewitnesses described a loss of power as the aircraft struck the water short of the runway. Stead also held hydroplane titles and had introduced aircraft engines in western races. The crash occurred after a brief display flight prior to the expo.
Ralph Denton 40 of Boulder City announces candidacy for Nevada’s lone House seat. He seeks to unseat Rep. Walter S. Baring after losing the Democratic nomination by 1,758 votes two years ago. Denton pledges a stronger Nevada voice and criticizes Baring on education aid and the Great Basin National Park.
Radiation from a low yield underground nuclear explosion traced to the Nevada Test Site escaped into the atmosphere. AEC officials said winds carried the radioactive gas over western states and dairy herds in Nebraska were advised to feed dry rations to prevent iodine contamination.

Gov. Grant Sawyer and Lt. Gov. Paul Laxalt will officiate the 11 a.m. ceremony placing a time capsule in the Broadway department store cornerstone at the Boulevard Shopping Center Desert Inn Road and Maryland Parkway. The capsule holds state and national relics and will remain for 100 years.
Utah Governor Calvin Rampton accused the Western Governors Conference resolutions committee of cavalier treatment as the Tourist Council proposal survived the committee vote. Rampton criticized process and said he would push changes to bring all resolutions directly to the floor at Billings next year. Oregon Governor Mark Hatfield, chair, noted the panel’s actions.
U S Army forces in Vietnam say they wrecked a major Communist supply center at the Da Ha River near Cambodia and ended both ends of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. B52 bombers blocked Mu Gia Pass for the second time as raids sank at least 111 supply sampans. The operation, by the 1st Infantry Division, left 6,000 khaki uniforms, 800 black pajamas, 1,037 tons of rice and 937 tons of salt destroyed, along with many livestock.
Las Vegas High School says farewell to the Rhythmettes at year end due to creator Miss Evelyn Stuckey’s ill health. Since 1949 the group earned national acclaim performing in New York City on the Ed Sullivan Show, in Washington for an inauguration, and across venues from Palm Springs to Quantico while drawing prominent press attention.
