Short History of Puncture Vine and Its Introduction to Nevada
The puncture vine or caltrop, introduced from the Mediterranean in ballast, spread via railroads into Nevada where hot dry interiors favor its growth. California began in 1903 and by 1912 the weed reached the San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys. Kern County now leads control efforts with annual state spending over $100 for this pest. Nevada’s first infestation was 1922 in Las Vegas on the Union Pacific line, expanding to five communities by 1926. Local Farm Bureau campaigns, oiling efforts from Verdi to Sparks, and new infestations at Ditho and Hazen reflect ongoing containment. Winnemucca reports a successful oiling drive and seeks broad support statewide for quarantine cooperation.
