American Legion Convention Opens in Nevada for 20th Year

The twentieth annual American Legion of Nevada convened with opening remarks by Post Commander Wm. L. Scot who welcomed delegates including Lt Governor Fred S. Alward and U S Senator Pat McCarran. A large Lake Mead picnic then drew 1500 legionnaires and families. McCarran’s later address and a stag party at the Apache Hotel were on the program alongside Auxiliary events.

Sheriff Clears Up Theft of Slot Machines

The Boulder County theft involved fourteen slot machines taken from a room on the Boulder highway last March. A warrant was issued for Jack Weisberger, a local slot machine dealer, charging disposal of two machines in Los Angeles. Weisberger was arrested today and released on $1000 bond. Authorities say further loot has been located and a full solution is expected soon. Louis Cohen represents Weisberger in court.

Screen Star To Attend Dance At Legion Ball

Hollywood star Eleanore Whitney will headline the American Legion Ball at the Memorial building tomorrow night. Judge Jack Lewis invited Miss Whitney, a Paramount dancing star known for Big Broadcast of 1937 Turn Off the Moon and radio appearances with Jack Benny and Rudy Vallee. She arrives on Western Air tomorrow afternoon.

Delegates Named To J C Conrab At National Convention

John F Cahlan the Jaycee president appointed Roland Wiley Ed Stone Robert Courtwright Frank McNamee and Charles R Clark as delegates to the national convention to be held in San Francisco June 15 A large Junior Chamber delegation is expected to attend the event.

Mr and Mrs B C D Marriage and their son Charles of Carson City visited Las Vegas on Monday. They previously lived in Caliente for years. Mr Marriage serves as state librarian.

Fire Destroys Market Spot Truck on Los Angeles Highway

A Market Spot truck and its produce were destroyed by a morning fire shortly after eight o clock twelve miles south of Las Vegas on the Los Angeles highway. Driver Cliff Luzier reported smoke from the rear and efforts to stop the fire failed. Market Spot officials estimate losses of 2500 dollars for contents with no insurance, while the truck itself is fully insured.

National Guard Unit Arrives En Route to Salt Lake City

Some 700 men from the 143rd Field Artillery of the California National Guard arrive in Las Vegas Sunday afternoon and camp for the night at Lorenzi Lake. The unit, en route to Salt Lake City for gunnery practice, includes 100 trucks and 25 75 millimeter guns.

Resignations Leave Boulder School Board Short of Members

Dissent within the Boulder City schools this week led to the resignations of Earl Brothers and Leslie Keyes after the dismissal of Lorene Kramer Mary Waltenspiel and Ruth Wheeler. Only Mrs. Ida Browder Hancock remains, and an election will select two new members.

New Commissioner Takes Up Duties

Harvey Luce, appointed to fill one of the vacancies on the city board, entered upon his duties Monday after his bond has been approved. Mayor Marble has placed the sewer and lights under his jurisdiction. It is expected that the other vacant place on the board will be filled soon.
