Governor Emmet D Boyle proclaims June 5 1917 Registration Day and a statewide appeal to subscribe to Liberty Loan Bonds to support World War I efforts. He cites Nevada’s wartime contributions and urges official canvassing, PTA and press involvement, and bonds as low as fifty dollars.
A motoring division unit led by Captain O R Bird set new speed records from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City and back. The trip to Salt Lake took about 36 hours and 14 minutes actual running time, 60 hours shorter than the prior record, with a return plan to beat the 55 hour mark. The convoy faced hail and mud, with delays near St Thomas and Las Vegas. Crew included Captain Bird, C A Bigelow, and Sergeants H A Baker and Roy Hamilton, who will command motor sections. The Arrowhead Trail route is praised as the quickest coast to inland route.
The Conklin Brothers garage received another carload of Fords this week and sold most of them. A. L. Chaffin Alex Anderson and F W Schwanbeck bought touring cars while Dr R W Martin purchased a runabout. Two cars remain spoken for. A further carload is hoped within 30 days and buyers are urged to place orders early.
At a mass meeting held Tuesday evening at the Court House the Clark County Chapter of the American National Red Cross elected officers for the coming year. Chairman Mrs. Mary Hewetson. 1st Vice Chairman Mrs. John S. Park. 2nd Vice Chairman J. L. Collins. Secretary R. J. Young Jr.. Treasurer Mrs. Minnie Clark. A Thursday executive session named a Board of Managers including Mesdames Evelyn Whitmire Mollie Holland C. M. McGovern I. C. Johnson and Messrs W. S. Park James Grady Leo McNamee.
Governor Boyle of Carson City Nevada proclaims June fifth as a non judicial Registration Day. Businesses especially saloons to close while banks stay open only for Liberty Loan Bond subscriptions. Banks will focus on selling bonds.
A Kingman Arizona report says the Clark interests of Montana intend building a railroad through Mohave county touching Kingman and Chloride and connecting with the Salt Lake Route at St. Thomas Nevada. S. L. Mining Review
A Studebaker Six from Arizona license ARIZ 4410 overturned on a curve just this side of the old railroad erade last Wednesday evening. The vehicle was badly damaged but the occupants reportedly escaped injury.
Women volunteers at the Majestic Theatre station encourage Liberty Loan Bond purchases. Participants include Mesdames Ball Squires Fell rath Ridge Ireland Clark Hewetson Schuyler Johnson Ronnow Dora Lee Bracken Mundy and Miss Wanda Ball.
