Two weeks remain in the Every Body Wins campaign as candidates race to amass votes. Active entrants are urged to work hardest for March 24 prizes, with inactive names to be dropped, subscriptions urged, and a call to seize the opportunity with determination to win.
The U S Shipping Board announced the sale of the Australian Orient, Oregon Oriental and American Oriental Mail lines to private concerns for operations from Pacific Coast ports to the far east. Bidders paid 3,743,661.00 dollars for 39 ships totaling 353,712 tons.
Mrs Coolidge is confined to her room with a severe grippe and misses the Army and Navy reception, the White House season’s most imposing event. The President, in the Blue Room, shakes hands with two thousand attendees despite her absence.
Indiana Governor Jackson was acquitted today of offering a ten thousand dollar bribe to Warren T. McCray in 1923. The court applied the statute of limitations and directed the verdict. Judge Charles M. McCabe condemned the Ku Klux Klan which Jackson belonged to.
The house committee on flood control reported a bill for Mississippi Valley flood control ensuring the government bears all costs. A seven member flood commission to be appointed by the president would oversee the work. The bill aligns with the president’s proposal that states pay 20 percent of the cost.
Mrs Luetla McAvoy holds a four thousand three hundred fifty vote lead over Mrs Racie Goodwin with several minor candidates close behind. Subscriptions already tallied show only small margins separating contenders as final counts loom Saturday night.
Washington February 16 The list of cabinet members backing Herbert Hoover grows to include Secretary of Agriculture Jardine joining Interior secretary Work Postmaster General New Secretary of the Navy Wilbur and Attorney General Sargent in support of Hoover’s nomination.
Memorial exercises on Lincoln's birthday observed nationwide with services at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church and First Congregational Church. Rev Canady of Springfield recalled personal Lincoln memories, while wreaths and Gettysburg Address readings highlighted an afternoon at the Lincoln Memorial in Potomac Park. The district court granted multiple divorces. Harry Thorngren and Maud Thorgren were separated on desertion grounds. Marion Ruth Seale obtained a divorce from Earl William Seale. Seville Gene Parks and Ethel Margaret Parks were divorced. Alta Randall secured a decree against Charles E. Randall. Ida Williamson was granted a divorce from Bert Williamson. Attorneys included Harley A. Harmon Steward and Henderson and O. D. Breeze.
The Las Vegas Age operates largely on a union basis with most employees being union workers paid union wages. Local shops are country shops. The Age desires a union label and will support union printers once enough are available to form a jurisdiction. Past management backed union men in Las Vegas.
In Los Angeles on February 16, the Hickman-Hunt murder trial jury remains incomplete. Officials expect the jury possibly through Monday and anticipate a longer trial than the Parker case. a notice of intention to appeal from the Parker death sentence was filed for Hickman.
The American Legion selects Kick In for presentation at Predate High School Auditorium on March 7 and 18. Cast includes Garvey Mephis Bessie Louise Stinson Myrtle Sylvester Luella McAvoy and others under C. K. Ryerse who is leading the casting effort and generating strong local interest.
On motion by attorney Charles Lee Hery, the plaintiffs in Vegas v. National Land Value Guaranty Company have suits scheduled for trial on February 23. The list of plaintiffs includes F. E. Matzdorf, W. H. Elwell, J. G. Laravey, Antone Matteucci, Maranda Craner, P. M. Houseman, Alice Passno, Alexina Moffat, O. C. Boggs, S. R. Whitehead, Mary E. Hodgens, Geo. H. Cook, F. A. Gibson, E. W. Nungesser, L. E. Dutton, C. Ronnow, Cora J. Noblitt, and E. E. Smith.
The President Cleveland docked in Honolulu with sixteen dead from pneumonia during the Manila voyage. Fifteen passengers were ill with pneumonia and one with smallpox. The deaths occurred on the voyage, while the ship carried passengers to Hawaii.
The body found on the beach may be that of Lieut Vilas R Knope of San Diego, in the plane with Miss Doran on the Dole Hawaiian flight. The body is badly preserved in the water, and an inquest is planned for Oxnard tomorrow.
Wahmoni, a new city eighty six miles from Las Vegas, shows rich gold strikes. The district spans four by fifteen miles with high grade ore and recent finds by McCrea, Lesler, and partners. A proposed 55 mile road from Beatty could cut driving time to about two and a half hours, boosting Las Vegas’ access and regional prosperity.
At yesterday's Rotary luncheon, the program was led by Coach Butcher. Senator Henderson spoke on the Compromise Bill and other legislative session features. A vocal solo by Miss Elinore Shirley with Miss Frances Martin was enjoyed.

He summarized Monterey Mission history and the business and entertainment of visitors in Monterey Bay’s romantic city. The piece notes events from Montrery California. The second item reports the U S accepting a proposal to outlaw progressive warfare in the New World, with former Secretary Hughes endorsing a Mexico submitted resolution at the Sixth Pan American Conference.
Earl Asquith will be buried Monday at Sutton Courtney churchyard near the Thames instead of Westminster Abbey. The simple Church of England service will be held, and Parliament adjourned in respect for the former prime minister.
Danville Illinois February 16 the bodies of two deputies who disappeared nine days ago while transporting prisoners to the penitentiary were found today. Both skulls were crushed the bodies covered with an automobile robe. The two prisoners remain missing.
Will and Jake Beckley returned Tuesday afternoon from a weeklong trip to Blythe Los Angeles and other California points. Leaving Riverside at nine o'clock Tuesday morning they reached Vegas at three thirty that afternoon. Jake Beckley who has been in poor health for some time reports that he is feeling much better.
George K. Morris chairman of the New York Republican Committee said after a White House visit and talk with President Coolidge that Coolidge is definitely out of the 1928 race. Morris named Hoover as the most likely candidate following the interview.
Washington February 16. Progress on the Boulder dam project is noted as commissioners from Arizona California and Nevada hold daily meetings to craft a tri state compact on power revenues. Separate groups work outside the conferences to draft general provisions. No agreement yet on water or power amounts but a strong effort toward consensus is reported. Senators Pittman introduces amendments to better serve Nevada if the compact is formed. If not, each state aims to safeguard its interests. Robert E Tally and Dwight B Heard plus other Arizona commissioners are due to arrive soon.
The Las Vegas Comace Club stages the first Las Vegas golf event Sunday at 8 am with four age groups: Class A under 45 Class B 45 to 55 Class C 55 to 65 and Class D over 65. Finals at 1 30 pm. Prizes include a cup a medal golf balls and plus fours. Women’s tournament set for the 26th as incorporation papers move to Carson City and club membership sits at eighty four.
At the Odd Fellows regular meeting at Levy's Hall a class of four received three degrees. Three drill teams performed with notable skill as Noble Grand A. D. Hinrickson presided. Supper followed the ceremonies. The candidates were C. E. Perry, James Muir, Roy De War and J. C. Kileen.
The Mesquite Club will host its annual Club Husbands Banquet at the Union Pacific dining room on Wednesday evening February 29 a Leap Year Party. Members are asked to invite a husband other than their own and to reserve by Monday evening via Mrs W J Park, chairwoman.
