Associated Press reports union tallies show about 400000 miners out, aligning closely with 401,488 paid members on file in Indianapolis at August end. Some operators’ claims exist, but the union count tracks near total membership, while Texas officials prepare for possible troop mobilization but no orders issued.
Torrential rains in the Dallas area raised the Trinity river 15 feet to flood stage. Streets flooded water entered buildings and rescuers helped motorists and pedestrians marooned by rising waters. Police and fire crews worked through the night as streetcar service was disrupted.
The senate agricultural committee favorably reported a bill to extend the federal sugar equalization board and authorize it to buy next year's sugar crops.
Four states Massachusetts New Jersey Maryland and Kentucky will elect governors next Tuesday alongside minor officials and constitutional amendments. In Trenton on November 1, the New Jersey election centers on prohibition. The Republican ticket pledges strict enforcement of prohibition and national law, while the Democratic ticket opposes the amendment as a violation of personal liberty and vows to oppose ratification. New Jersey is among three states that have not ratified, arguing it has no place in the fundamental laws and infringes personal liberty.
