Commencement Exercises Mark 1901 Graduates at Atheer Auditorium

The 1901 graduating class at the university held a large commencement in an unusually full auditorium. Diplomas were awarded by President Smiley to 12 graduates across the graduate, liberal arts, mechanical arts, and mines programs, with Downey and Durlacher named to honor for excellence. Governor Richards attended briefly, then left for the capital.

Notorious gunfighter Burns slain by Wallace in Mammoth duel

In Mammoth last night Wallace killed Burns a famed gunfighter who rode with Burns on the range. Burns once worked as a Wells Fargo shotgun messenger and helped capture Gontag and Evans for a train robbery. Cowboys buried Burns with his boots on and danced on the coffin amid posthumous clashes over a reward.

Desertion Convicts Begin Five Year Hard Labor Terms

Private Alexander McAlfey of Company B and Private Higgins of Company MH, Fortieth regiment, arrive from Manila aboard the Pennsylvania after desertion during North Mindanao fighting. Higgins, captured, was sentenced to five years hard labor. McAlfey’s five year term mirrors the fate of his comrade. Both taken to Alcatraz to begin imprisonment.

Queen Bee Milling Company Denies Denver Reports

Louis Miller, manager of Queen Bee Mining and Milling, dismisses Denver press claims about American Mining and Investment and asserts no link to Queen Bee. Civil Government to Start in Philippines on July Fourth

The Waerington government will be established in the Philippines on July 4 with Judge William H. Tan named as civil governor. He will head the Philippine commission as it continues, while the president through the secretary of war appoints the other civil governor.
