Women urged to help register on June 5 festival day

Washington June 1 a appeal from the Council of National Defense woman’s committee led by Dr Anas Howard Shaw urges women nationwide to participate in June 5 registration day. The letter from Secretary Baker and Mrs Shaw calls for active cooperation to demonstrate national solidarity and aid war efforts. The University weather service reports last month was the wettest May since 1908, with total precipitation of 2.43 inches. Observed highs reached 21 degrees and lows 7 degrees, barometer 33.088, wind 244 miles from the north, max velocity 20 mph, humidity 90 percent, dew point 28, and trace snowfall and precipitation.

Government to cut cantonments for army and guard

Washington June 1 The War Department reduced the number of cantonments for the new army and national guard from thirty two to fifteen to place the guard under canvas. Secretary Baker says the cost is within reason. Congress debates a 77 million dollar appropriation while thirty two cantonments would cost about 160 million.
