The ad notice outlines 12 cents per line for first insertion and 5 cents per line for subsequent insertions. Transient ads such as Lost items and sales notices are 50 cents for the first insertion and 25 cents for each later one. Subscription is 100 dollars prepaid or 150 dollars if not prepaid, by A. M. Bock, publisher.
The Military Service Act is explained for those affected by the first class. A proclamation appears elsewhere and postmasters supply forms for service reports or exemption claims. Eligible men must act by November 10. Criteria: unmarried or widowed with no children on July 6, 1917, at least 20 years old, born on or after January 1, 1883. See your postmaster for details.
Citizens are urged to act quickly to apply for exemptions or report for service under the Military Service Act. The message warns procrastination could cost important privileges and calls on Canadians to present claims promptly after the proclamation issues calling the first class. Promptness is framed as both patriotic and in individuals' best interest.
Canadians have shown strong support for naval service since the war began. About 5 300 officers and men have joined the Canadian Naval Service, while 400 officers serve in the Royal Navy motor boat patrol off the British coast and beyond. Thirty six Halifax Royal Naval College cadets have become Royal Navy officers, with 40 more training there now. Canada’s waterways and water sports culture make naval duties well suited to its people.
