Sanctuaries Established on Texas Gulf Coast by Audubon Leader
Three bird sanctuaries Green Island North Bird Island and South Bird Island were established in the lower Gulf Coast region of Texas under T Gilbert Pearson president of the National Association of Audubon Societies. Pearson spent weeks studying bird life noting rare species and a dangerous peccary or javelina roams the chaparral in thousands. He described the peccary as highly aggressive and capable of injuring hunters, recounting a wounded animal killing a hunter’s horse and leg before dying nearby.
