Dairyman’s Farm Milk Sale Grows Despite Costs

Arlington Muller operates Elm dale Farms Dairy selling raw milk in gallon containers from a 36 cow herd at Elm dale northwest of Lititz. Milk is cooled in a 300 gallon bulk tank and dispensed in the sales room at 75 cents per gallon. Surplus milk is shipped to Heishey Chocolate Company. Inspectors visit monthly and the venture carries heavy start up costs including a $7 000 investment in the sales room and holding tank. The family markets farm produce and ice cream to boost income.

Sugarbeets Could Be A Lancaster County Crop

Penn State Extension specialists toured sugarbeet plots in Hershey and nearby areas to assess their potential for Lancaster County and the state. Dr Clarence Bryner noted yield data are crucial and 20 tons per acre would be desirable. Michigan harvests 18 to 20 tons per acre. Sugarbeets require a four year rotation and about 120000 acres to feed a refinery, implying 30000 acres must be under cultivation each year.
