A mixture of barley vetch and rye is fed into the blower by Etam Martin of Lititz. The blend will carry the dairy herd through the summer if pasture is short. This is the Martins first use of the mixture. The unloader is a detachable electric motor driving through a gearbox, built to Martins specifications in a local shop.
The Crop Reporting Board states milk production per cow averaged 2176 pounds on May 1, up four percent from the prior May 1 record and 17 percent above the May 1 average. Total April output reached 11 428 million pounds, up one percent from April 1956 and nine percent above the long-term average. Egg production for April was 18.7 eggs per hen, vs 18.4 last year and the 18 average. United States farm flocks laid 5 731 million eggs in April, two percent above April 1956 but four percent below the 1946-55 average.
Seasonal guidance urges use of mechanical hay conditioners and finishers to cut field curing time and preserve nutrients. Extension plans for a Mow Hay Finisher are available in Lancaster. Advice covers sowing soybeans before June 10 to ensure August harvest and inoculation, plus seeding Sudan grass for summer pasture and notes on toxicity and grazing timing for tall grasses.
County Agent Max Smith of Lancaster County receives the USDA Superior Service Award for outstanding leadership in 4 H and beef cattle promotion. Also honored is Dr. George F. Johnson for developing extension visual aids programs and boosting national interest through talks and authorship.

The 1957 June Dairy Month in Pennsylvania is described as probably the largest food festival attempted in 30 days. The state observance is the culmination of four years of planning by 19 organizations, with a $25 million merchandising push across 48 states. Organizations supporting include the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, Chain Store Council, Dairy Men’s Assn., Agriculture Dept., Penn State, Milk Dealers, and the State Grange, plus 12 local groups and a new Pennsylvania Food Marketing Committee.
