Pfautz Wins In Regional 4 H Conservation

Jeffrey Pfautz a 16 year old from Stevens R1 was named a regional winner in the 1968 69 Conservation Awards program. He is one of 25 youths selected in Pennsylvania and will attend a three day event at agricultural and conservation facilities in northwestern Pennsylvania. The selections were announced by Edward Minimier assistant State 4-H leader at Penn State University.

Farm Calendar Highlights From May Meetings

Regional winners were announced from 25 counties after judging at the Mt Any Fair. The Lincoln Community 4 H Club and Farm and Home events are scheduled with evening sessions and continued coverage on page 9.

Meat inspection law change discussed by officials

Dr George H Zacherle of the Pa Dept of Ag told local meat processors and farmers at the Farm and Home Center that USDA aims to relax the meat inspection interpretation. He noted federal inspectors faced a different situation with small producers as the 1967 law took effect.

Local Farmers Cooperate In Soil Conservation Efforts

Lancaster Farming reports a coordinated soil and water conservation effort by Lancaster County farmers. Orval Bass and district staff visit four local farms to showcase ongoing practices, starting with Grant Kieffer’s Goshen farm where 12 000 feet of new tiling replaces crumbling concrete drains built ten years ago to improve drainage and production of alfalfa and wheat.

Tobacco Planting Starts in Groffdale Area

The 1969 tobacco planting season begins with reports of first plants in ground Tuesday in Groffdale. Reuben Martin of Ephrata RD 3 plans to plant as neighbors gather. his beds lie on the south hill, sheltered from cold winds and helped by plastic covering to accelerate germination.

Ephrata Boys Excel In Meat Judging

Three Ephrata High School FFA boys won the right to attend state FFA Activities Week as meat judges. Jay Zimmerman Clark Stauffer and Marlin Bollmeyer earned the spot at the Area FFA Meat Judging Contest in Lan caster. Activity Days at Penn State are set for July 1 3.

Nelson Weaver Tops Dairy Products Judge in Ephrata

Ephrata FFAChapter swept the dairy products judging as Nelson Weaver 14 son of Luke and Mrs Weaver led with a low score of 595 in the 82-participant event at Penn Daniel Inc. York Lancaster county schools were represented. Ricky Pfautz, Warren Hoover and Dennis Pal followed with high scores and the Ephrata team claimed its seventh straight annual win.
