Earl Sauder, founder and president, discusses five decades at the New Holland feed mill now on Railroad Ave. Since 1939 the site has served dairy farmers within a 20 mile radius. The firm began in 1925 as a mix of dairy and poultry feeds and now emphasizes dairy feed amid volatile markets.
A party of thirty Ayrshire cattle breeders from England and the British Isles toured Ayrshire farms in Chester County and visited the Masonic Home in Elizabethtown. Horace Mann led the visit to the dairy barns with calves heifers and cows and three Ayrshire bulls on stud as part of the breed centennial celebration and the national Ayrshire Show preparations.
Dick Warner reports Southeastern Pennsylvania's early crop status lags a week to 10 days due to cold wet April weather. With sun, planting should catch up. projected corn in Lancaster about 180000 acres. No till and forage silage rise as tobacco acreage holds steady. farmers hire custom operators for planting.
FFA members from Lancaster County gathered at Ephrata High School for their Leadership Training Conference to learn officer duties for the coming year. Ruby Ginder, a Manheim junior, was recognized for outstanding FFA work.
Jeff Glackin a Solanco High School senior and active FFA member works part time on the Paul Trimble dairy farm near Quarryville. He milks Jersey cows, handles chores before and after classes, and says farming is the only truly honest work. Continued on Page 19.
