Soil expert advises topdressing Redcoat wheat for yield gains
James Eakin of Pennsylvania State University told about 200 county farmers at the Soils and Crop day that up to 100 pounds of actual nitrogen per acre on Redcoat wheat can be applied without lodging, with 60 pounds per acre likely paying for fertilizer. Barley should avoid topdressing due to lodging risk. Penn State trials also found nitrogen on corn shows little yield difference across application methods. The meeting was sponsored by the county extension service.
