Three pond meetings for farmers to learn pond management will be held in Lancaster County at 9 30 am 1 30 pm and 6 30 pm at three farms. Max Smith notes algae weed control is difficult and permits are needed from the fish warden before treatment. Charles A Prinz will attend as a local fish warden.
Lancaster County Poultry Association schedules a one day tour to Tangier Island aboard air conditioned coach and charter boat. Hostess Hilda Crockett will serve luncheon at her home. Cost is 20 dollars per person covering lunch boat ride and bus fare. Sign up by June 30.
Tobacco planting in Lancaster County and nearby areas runs a week to 10 days late due to wet weather and slow plant growth. Ag agent Max Smith cites late timing for start and possible 3 to 5 percent acreage drop. Dairy-focused farmers shift to alfalfa and corn for feed while non-dairymen continue tobacco as winter occupation.
Lan caster County cucumber acreage recently measured at about 78 acres per Harvey Good of Oxford Pickle Co. Plantings up three to six inches by mid week. First picking expected around July 4 with season through late August. Beetle pressure remains the main management issue. Prices hold at 1.26 dollars per bushel.

Penn State University has been named recipient of a 150000 dollar USDA research grant as part of a nine grant, one million total, to support state agricultural experiment station research on corn leaf blight. Projects target climate influence, field monitoring, and computer simulation of the blight. University Park scientist R. R. Nelson participates.
