Four schools dominate FFA Week contests

In Iversity Park four schools led the Pennsylvania FFA with top honey medals across 22 contests at Penn State. Solanco New Holland and Red each claimed multiple golds in dairy foods, land judging, meat judging, and related events. Candy Barker named FFA Princess for 1977 78 from Northern Potter High School.

First combined barley exceeds expectations in York County

Bearded Barsey barley shows promise despite cold winter and dry spring. William Sprenkle of Sprenkle and Sprenkle reports some of the nicest hay he has seen and forecasts high yields for most of York County. Barley priced at 1.90 per bushel at West York mill with 12 13 percent moisture and 47 pound bushel weight amid cloudy, showery weather.

Ag graduates speak on problems of land use and farming trends

Berks County sees rising farm consolidation as Norman Manbeck and other Conrad Weiser graduates warn small farms cannot compete. They urge higher yields and disease resistance through breeding as land becomes scarcer. The future may favor corporations and larger partnerships as population grows.

Pennsylvania House approves farm protection bill unanimously

The Pennsylvania House passed HB 111 192 to 0, aiming to shield farmland from non farming condemnations. Rep. Noah Wenger said the measure would limit government land grabs, create a committee to review proposed condemnations, and protect productive farms including a Lancaster County case saved from acquisition.
