Robert Hummer operates Sporting Valley Turf Farm north of Manheim and owns 75 acres of sod used primarily for wholesale golf courses builders garden stores and athletic fields. He employs five fulltime and about as many part time workers and says sod is a year round crop but harvests depend on ground conditions. The farm uses Kentucky bluegrass blends with careful mowing fertilizing and weed control and September is the biggest seeding month.
