Milk Production, Prices and Demand in 1973 Outlook
Production to rise in 1973 though profits squeeze for farmers as feed costs climb. Milk output per cow grew in 1972 while herd numbers fell slightly, pushing prices high but reducing farmer margins. Consumption rose in 1972 with cheese up 11 percent and yogurt up 43 percent. Government support declines likely to continue with 1973 milk price support adjustments.
