Lancaster County Soul Water Conservation District directors outlined the 25th Conservation Field Day and Plowing Contest at a Monday meeting. Contour plowing features defending champion Marvin Zimmer man in a challenge at Edwin Kurtz farm, Ephrata Rl, starting 10 am with entries limited to ten and due by July 22.

The Lancaster County small grain harvest proceeds slowly under daily rainfall with 2.34 inches recorded at the Lancaster Pumping Station by Wednesday. Barley storage rose in the week's second half with about 60 percent cut. quality unchanged and some loads show high garlic content.

Smucker Wins Trip To Purdue U August 6
Michael E. Smucker of Ephrata R2 earned a state scholarship from the Pennsylvania Assn. of Farmer Cooperatives Summer Institute. He will attend a one week course on cooperatives at Purdue University starting August 6. Smucker led a group discussion and represented the Grassland Chapter of Future Farmers of America among 170 Pennsylvania youths. Also attending from Lancaster County were Thomas Houser of Lampeter and Earl.
