Breeding Lean Hogs Outpace Diet in Lean Meat Gain
ARS swine researchers compared Duroc and Yorkshire hogs bred for low or high backfat, fed full or restricted energy rations. Results show lean production favored breeding over feeding, with low-fat lines yielding 66 pounds lean at full feed and 59 pounds lean under 75 percent energy, vs high-fat lines 52 and 55 pounds. Average slaughter weight was 195 pounds.
