An exceptional barley crop is being harvested in southern parts of the Commonwealth with fields producing as much as 80 bushels per acre according to the Pennsylvania Crop Reporting Service. The state average last year was 45 bushels per acre, a record. wheat yields are up though storms caused some oat edging.
Farmers learn that corn suckers vary by variety and removing them may not boost yields. Late summer showers end and caution is urged on using insecticides only as livestock pesticides. Misused formulations can harm animals, masking illnesses and jeopardizing meat safety. Dairy farmers must select proper pesticides for cattle and barns.
