Robert Groff predicts a mostly steady year for Lancaster County farmers in 1962. He cites world conditions, weather risks, and strict management as keys to profitability. He urges planning, cost cutting, and net-income focus to ensure a peaceful, prosperous year.
Lester Shughart, director of distribution for the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau Cooperative Association, announced changes at the county affiliate meeting. Seed corn will be sold by kernel count in bags of 60,000, legume seed royalties are dropped, and liquid protein livestock feed is being explored. The cooperative also offers complete farm building contracting, feeder pig trials, and potential veal calf production, while expanding marketing programs and exploring a liquid protein option for livestock.
eighth grade Warwick Junior High student David L. Wenger won both exhibit and total project book in the Lancaster County 4 H Entomology roundup held at the Farm Bureau building in Lancaster. Wenger exhibited 210 mounted insect kinds and aims to become an entomologist.
Donald Trimble takes first place in the 4-H corn exhibit and Paul Trimble finishes second in the exhibit phase. Paul also leads project book scoring while Daniel Brubaker and Ephrate R1 place in the top ranks. Annette Long and Mark Nestleroth are noted for project book standings.
The Pennsylvania Guernsey Breeders Association names Richard R. Ankrum of Peach Bottom Lancaster County as Southeast District winner in the Junior Project for High Production. His two year old Guernsey yielded 9,556 pounds of milk and 416 pounds of butterfat in 304 days. he entered as a 4-H Club member. Awards will be given at the Guernsey Breeders banquet during the 1962 Farm Show.
County Ex tension Executive Committee meets at the Production Credit building on Roseville Road. Northeast Weed Control Conference runs Jan 3 to 5 at the Hotel New Yorker in New York. County 4 H Guernsey club meets Jan 3 to 7 at the Farm Bureau Building Dillerville Pike. County tobacco show Jan 4 to 12 noon at the Farm Bureau building, Diller 4:30 pm. County teachers of vocational agriculture meet at the high school in Ephrata.
The five day forecast shows average nightly temperatures around 25 and afternoon highs near 40 with light precipitation possible toward period end. Past year featured record snowfall, February very cold for six years, abrupt snow melt around February 12, and two tornadoes with limited damage.
