Sealtest Dairy Ends Independent Milk Purchases
Sealtest Dairy in Philadelphia announced it would stop buying milk from independent producers in the area. A December 14 letter urged farmers to join cooperatives, as the company will source all milk from cooperatives going forward. The change was framed as a shift in buying methods, not exit from the milk business, with many Lancaster area producers expected to be affected. Farmers may still sell to other firms or join a coop, while observers believe the move will have limited impact amid a strong milk market.

End to Cholera Embargo Seen
Dr. Homer Forney of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture said if no more cholera infections are found, breeder and feeder hogs may move within Pennsylvania except in quarantined Montgomery Cumberland and part of Bucks Counties. Investigations target all feeder and breeder swine in those areas and could finish by December 23. If no new cases appear, hog movement restrictions could end. any new infection would change the outlook. The department also canceled all hog competition at the 1973 Pennsylvania Farm Show. The outbreak began December 8 in a Montgomery County herd, prompting a state halt on hog movements. A partial lift came December 18 allowing market hogs to move to slaughter points.
