Sloat Elected President of Lancaster County Agents

Harry S. Sloat, associate county agent, was elected president of the Pennsylvania County Agents Association at the annual banquet in University Park. Ruth K. Kimble was re elected secretary of the Extension Home Economists, with Lancaster County represented by Max Smith Victor Plastow and Miss Nancy Bowen. About 90 home economists and 149 county agents attended the meetings.

LanChester Chorus Sets Christmas Concert and Religious Program

The LanChester Chorus will perform Christmas music with choral and organ arrangements in its annual Christmas concert at 3 pm in the Christiana Fire Co. auditorium. Directed by Donald L Trostle with Dick Wright as manager and accompanist, the choir also appears tonight at 7:30 pm in a religious program at Honey Brook Methodist Church.

Choirs Present Christmas Cantata at Chestnut Level Church

Choirs from Chestnut Level Presbyterian and Memorial Methodist Quarryville will join in a Sunday evening Christmas cantata at Chestnut Level Church starting at 8 p.m. The program The Music of Bethlehem was performed last Sunday at Quarryville Exhured before a capacity audience.

World farm production hits new high in 1956 57

World output of crops and livestock rose to 120 percent of prewar levels in 1956 57, with Free World at 126 125 and 122 percent in prior years. Per capita production holds at 97 percent of prewar for the third straight year as population grows. Communist bloc lower but rising.

Henning to Speak at Farm Women Annual Meeting

William L. Henning State Secretary of Agriculture will address the Society of Farm Women of Pennsylvania during the 40th Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg. The meeting opens Monday morning in the Education Building with an annual banquet that evening and a concluding business session the next day. Mrs. Charles Shriver of Waynesburg is president and Mrs. Edward Boyd of Stoystown is secretary.

Filler Tobacco Estimate Raised in Pennsylvania

The USDA increases 1956 filler tobacco forecast in Pennsylvania by about one million pounds as yields reach 1,700 pounds per acre and acreage climbs to 30,000 acres. Total crop output rises to 51 million pounds, second only to 1951’s 55.7 million.

Laying Tests New Pennsylvania Program Announced

Harrisburg announces replacement of the 25 year old Standard Egg Laying Test with the First Annual Pennsylvania Random Sample Laying Test to assess egg laying and other traits. Secretary Henning says results will help breeders compare strains and aid commercial poultrymen in evaluating economic factors.

Exhibit's Space At Farm Show Fills Fast In 1957

Harrisburg reports about 100 applicants were refused commercial space for the 1957 Pennsylvania Farm Show due to space limits. Over four acres were allocated for the 40th anniversary event opening January 14 and running to January 18, with more than 300 commercial exhibitors in the main hall and overflow into the poultry section. The Farm Show Commission chair said many remain on a three years plus waiting list, urging more space. Revisions to stall layouts will accommodate record beef and dairy entries, while half the hall showcases latest farm equipment and other farm home goods.

Bridge Hearing at Harrisburg Dec 26 Sets Economic Impact

A public hearing will determine the economic impact of constructing the South Bridge across the Susquehanna River linking Lemoyne and Harrisburg. The Department of Highways will hold the 2 pm session December 26 near Third and Lowther Streets in Lemoyne, with the bridge extending to the river steps in Harrisburg.
