Guernsey Breeders Plan Spring Tour in Lancaster County

The Lancaster County Guernsey Breeders association reorganized and announced tentative plans for a spring tour. Raymond Rohrer and others were named to leadership and a committee chaired by Rohrer and Witmer will plan the tour with a summer Field Day organized by Stoltzfus Hershey and Denlinger.

Editor's Farm Home Burns Near Nodaway Iowa

Ernest J. Neill of Lancaster Farming learned Wednesday afternoon a fire destroyed the nine room Sunny Slope Stock Farm home owned by him and his two sisters near Nodaway. Iowa fire companies from three towns were summoned. Household goods of tenants Mr and Mrs Edward Goldsmith were saved. The home was long known as a county landmark.

Lancaster County industries total over half a billion

Lancaster County industrial output last year exceeded 517.59 million dollars with 39 941 workers and a payroll of 131.27 million. City of Lancaster output reached 228.62 million with 17 234 workers and 66.03 million in wages. Columbia and other areas show gains. continued on Page Three.

Fred Frey Steer Places Fifth in International Exposition

Fred Frey reports a steer he fed placed fifth in a carcass class at the International Livestock Exposition. Shown by Bob Wildesh of Sunbury Iowa, the Angus came from Alimar Farm Seubertsville Pa, and Frey acquired it last May as a summer yearling.

Referendum on Tobacco Quotas Set for Dec 29

Lancaster County growers will vote on December 29 to accept or reject marketing quotas totaling 37,800,000 lbs of Pennsylvania cigar filler tobacco for 1956. The plan lowers the 1956 allotment to 24,577 acres, with three questions on quotas for 1956 and 1957 58 and the rejection option. A two third majority is required for adoption and notices will be mailed to eligible growers.

Moderation in Weather Lingers Over Lancaster County

Winter remains in check with below freezing temperatures and light melting on Wednesday. Snowfall Friday left patches of ice and several accidents as Highway 72 near Willow Street faced blockage from jackknifed trucks. totals ranged from half to three inches, with Colerain Township reporting the maximum.

Poultry Center Plans Studied in Lancaster

Six men were named to lead a fundraising campaign for a new poultry center in Lancaster after City Council approval for commercial construction at Roseville Road and the Bypass. The Lancaster County Poultry Exchange and Lancaster Poultry Association purchased a 3.5 acre site for 7500 dollars. Plans from Buchart Engineering showed offices auditorium and kitchen. Estimated costs ranged from 60000 to 85000 dollars with definite decisions delayed for closer study.

County Ag Council to Meet Next January 26

Wayne B. Rentschler organized a Lancaster County Agricultural Council draft calendar to avoid date conflicts. Frank G. Fitzroy of USDA Packers and Stock Yards Division spoke at Lancaster Stock Yards about scale inspections in cattle buying and selling. The session occurred at North Queen Street branch of Lancaster County National Bank. The meeting is set for January 26.
