4-H Showmanship and Breed Winners Named in Lancaster Dairy Show
Donald Bollinger of Manheim won the overall showmanship award at the Lancaster County 4 H Dairy Show held this week at the Guernsey Sales Pavilion. Judges cited his precise positioning of the animal as a key factor. Marilyn Krantz won best fitted animal, with J Nelson Landis earning Reserve Grand Champion Fitter. The Breed Type competition crowned Averill Royer and James Kettering among top placers in Holstein classes, with Harden Heroic Rosanna named Grand Champion in the Guernsey breed and Peter Witmer Reserve.

Annual 4-H Pig Show and Sale Opens at Stock Yards
The Annual 4-H Pig Club Show and Sale will be held Wednesday August 19 and Thursday August 20 in the small animal barn at the Stock Yards. About 40 4-H youth will show 170 hogs across heavy medium and light weight classes with both singles and pens. Hogs arrive Wednesday at 7:00 am and the show begins Thursday at 6:00 am.

August 15 schedule in Elizabethtown and Mount Joy includes 4 H roundups at Musser Leghorn Farms, clothing contests at Penn Manor High School, and 4 H meetings at Mrs. David Hess’s home. County 4 H entries from Lancaster and Lebanon counties converge at Penn Manor High School with supervisors present. Also listed are Co FFA events at Lampeter and a county baseball playoff game.

County teams placed in Horse Poultry Livestock Swine Dairy Flower and demonstrations with winners named from Manheim Lititz Quarryville and other local 4 H groups. Representatives for the Keystone Award included Evelyn Groff and Eugene Hosler with several other exhibitors noted in Baby Beef Forestry and home economics judging.

Tobacco Yield Expected To Be Above Last Year
The August 1 forecast from the Pennsylvania Crop Reporting Service projects tobacco production in Pennsylvania at 49.4 million pounds with a yield of 1900 pounds per acre. It notes production is 1 percent below 1963 and 9 percent below the 1958-62 average, while yield is 8 percent above 1963 and 7 percent above the five year average. Early July progress was behind normal but recent rains improved conditions.
