The ASCS community committee elections will choose committeemen in all 16 communities. Nominees may be added by petition, with petitions due August 16, ballots mailed August 29, and returns due September 16. Three regular and two alternate members per community. regulars serve as county convention delegates on September 27 at 7 30 p.m.
Two Lancaster County farmers of America, James Hess of Penn Manor and Gerald Phillips of Solanco, were elected to the National FFA Band. Hess, a tuba player and three year state band member, is a senior. Phillips, a drummer and 1968 Solanco graduate, attends Delaware Valley College.
Avery Stafford of Stafford Shire Farm Peru NY outlined four basics for a successful dairy operation at Atlantic On Parade Day held at Atlantic Breeders Cooperative HQ on Rt 230. The event included a cow knowledge contest and a chicken barbecue for about 2,200 attendees with speakers ABC Manager David Yoder and others.
August week events include DHIA Directors and Supervisors meeting August 12. Lancaster Guernsey Field Day August 13 led by K D Linde south of Quarryville. ABS Barn Meeting at Gideon Stoltzfus Farm Chester Co. Ephrata Adult Farmer Field Trip August 14. Achievement Day judging August 15 at Farm and Home Center followed by 4-H Queen Contest. Saddle Cinches 4-H Club meets August 16 at Charles Zerphey Farm Milton Grove.
Jay W. Irwin promoted from Lancaster County Agent to associate county agent effective after a Wednesday announcement by Marion R. Deppen assistant director of the Agricultural Extension Service at Pennsylvania State University. Deppen cited superior performance in the youth program and adult poultry farm management.
A 19 year old Bucks County Miss Judy Lemoa from Newton Square was chosen to represent Southeastern Pennsylvania at the state Queen of the Furrow contest in Hershey Aug 27 29. Lancaster County Queen Lynn Helstand was eliminated at Allentown with runnerup Virginia Lu Tallman of Schuylkill County also advancing as alternate. County queen and runner up accompanied by families and Furrow Contest Chairman Aaron Z Stauffer. State 4H livestock teams from Lancaster County won championships at Penn State with top individual scores in Junior and Senior divisions.
Lancaster County group visits the USDA Beltsville Maryland swine research facility to observe a breeding program. Dave Morgan notes selection on back fat across twelve generations with sires chosen for fatness leaness and average as control. An extremely lean boar and one with high back fat are highlighted.
Farmers must file by September 30 to receive the state gas tax refund. New filers mail requests to Thomas Z. Minehart at the Harrisburg Finance Building. regular filers receive the form automatically. The national refund is handled with annual income tax.
