Spring Treatment Will Control Alfalfa Weevil and Spittle Bugs
Penn State entomologists warn alfalfa fields not sprayed last fall should be watched for weevil damage in coming weeks. If last fall used proper dieldrin or heptachlor, no spring treatment is needed for first cutting. Do not use dieldrin or heptachlor in spring as residues stay in forage. If not treated last fall, Guthion can control weevil larvae and spittle bugs for 20 to 30 days but must be sprayed 21 days before harvest. Malathion and methoxychlor may be applied up to seven days before harvest when larvae are abundant, and should be used only then. Most farmers spray too early.
