Easter lambs bring high prices across Pennsylvania markets

Easter sales of Spring slaughter lambs and goat kids ran seven days across Pennsylvania markets ending the Wednesday before Easter. Prices topped 1.30 for 10-35 pound milk fed lambs at New Holland and Vintage with over 100 animals sold near that level. Choice milk-fed kid goats reached 40 a head at Chambersburg as Lancaster Stock Yards reported 2075 head sold in a four hour Monday auction.

Dairy Industry Update Held For Area Dairymen

Stouchsburg PA. An educational meeting for area dairymen discussed past developments and future trends under the 1977 Dairy Industry Update. Ralph Smith of NEDCO explained milk price supports aimed at consumer supply, not farmer profits, noting prices stay above support and the system relies on government purchases of milk solids.

High honor for York Holstein Mollie in state citation

The 14 year old Holstein cow Woodbine Ivanhoe Mollie became the first animal to receive a Pennsylvania House of Representatives citation. Representative James M. Burd presented the honor at a Hello Mollie party held March 31 at the Farm Show Building with the George Knight Jr family of Airville R2. Mollie has produced 251 615 pounds of milk in her life and earned Honorable Mention All American honors. Co sponsoring were Robert Butera and Raymond J Kerstetter with the state Department of Agriculture represented.

Carter Meets Farmers Union In White House Discussion

President Carter hosted National Farmers Union leaders including Albert Mellinger and Tony Dechant for an 80 minute session with Mondale Bergland and aides. Farm group voices dismay at 1977 support rates and proposed 1978 terms while Carter seeks a stable agriculture with stronger export potential.

Cinderella wins Holstein show in Harrisburg

More than 300 animals paraded at the 24th annual Black and White Show of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association held at the Farm Show building. Andfor Astronaut Cinderella owned by the Robert Kauffman family of Elizabethtown earned grand champion, also taking first in the Aged Cow class. Christine Gitt of Littlestown won Reserve Champion with Amply Rag Apple Ormsby Nellie. Premier Breeder honor went to Tom and Cindy Shaeffer. Premier Exhibitor to Mowry Farms.
