Bowman Turns to Retail Bull Beef for Steady Profits
Clyde Bowman of Myerstown keeps a growing list of customers by retailing choice bull beef and related cuts. He says retailing adds about 30 dollars per head versus auction sales, though rising auction prices and repeat orders keep him balancing between markets. Customers pay about 1.10 a pound delivered, with wrapping and freezing extra, yielding roughly 250 pounds of meat per side or quarter. He relies on word of mouth and sends year end calendars and pens as small advertising, while continuing to raise young bulls for slaughter.
