Fire Routs Old Landmark House In Carroll County
Saturday morning a fire alarm sounded at the residence of W. H. third on the north side of town. The hose failed to reach the blaze and the hook and ladder team, with about three hundred citizens, fought to save the structure but the old landmark, built fifty years ago by David Emmert over a spring, was destroyed apart from stone walls. The owner, Mr. Baird, had sold to Hardee Griffith and the property had just been insured. Mrs. Keeffer will tend the nearby infant, found abandoned near the gate and taken to the county farm. The community held services, gatherings, and memorial events across town with various local figures noted, including Comrade Thomas S. Stevens and efforts to spruce up cemeteries and grounds.

Messiahs debt case leaves little chance of repayment
The Freeport Democrat reports that George W. Courtley of Chicago, who won a 50,000 judgment against Rockford "messiah" George Jacob Schweinfurth, may not see payment. Sheriff Robert Oliver filed a debtor’s schedule listing worn clothing, two coats, a two year old colt, a gold watch, and other items, valued minimally, as exempt. Schweinfurth’s lieutenants Baldwin and Ward cannot be located, and no property for seizure is found. The paper also notes local items: Nursery Creamery dividend, a Friday cycling trip, recent baptism at Maple Grove, and road work praise.
