Impeachment Tension as Kentucky Militias Move In
In Frankfort Governor Bradley orders out three Kentucky State Guard regiments to protect the capitol as the legislature convenes. Militia rounds the statehouse while senators, representatives, and officers prepare for tense proceedings amid threats of impeachment and calls for protection from presiding officers.
Militia at Kentucky Capitol Sparks Senate Row
Three companies of the state guard guarded the Kentucky State Capitol grounds as a political clash erupted over Governor Bradley's militia call. A Senate committee was formed to probe the action while a joint session maneuvered around a ballot for a U.S. senator, with adjournment pending further votes. Adjutant Collier said the militia would stay until the legislature adjourns. Meanwhile Postmaster Frank Mapes of Kansas City died by his own hand after an embezzlement probe began at the post office.
