General Suarez Leads Cuban Insurgent Army for Independence
General Manuel Suarez Delgado, known as General Suarez, commands the Fifth Cuban army corps with HQ near Manicaragua. He is tall and imposing in white linen, backed by a trained staff and a cavalry detail guarding a ramshackle tobacco shed as a makeshift headquarters. He notes Cuba seeks belligerent recognition from the United States to hasten victory, while Spain’s taxes and trade rulings cripple Cuban industry and force reliance on expensive imports. He asserts sufficient food and arms to continue a long struggle, and predicts Cuban success.

Horse Uncovers 1750 Guinea Coin in Flatbush Earth
A horse belonging to John Brady of Flatbush pulled a round stone from the earth near East Twenty-ninth Street and Avenue G. When removed, a copper coin bearing King George II and the year 1750 dropped out. Brady gave the coin to Henry A. Meyer of Vanderveer farm, who will wear it as a watch charm. Nearby earthwork from a former British-occupied farm yields echoes of the Revolutionary era and a historic arrest near the battle of Long Island.
