In Lamesa, two banks hold deposits totaling 69.39 million dollars as of the quarterly call. Officials note stability despite crop failures and inflation, with loans around 29.26 million and cash flow tied to a fall harvest.
Perry Roberts was elected incoming president of the Lamesa Chamber of Commerce at a Thursday board meeting. He will take over Jan 1, with Jerry Harris named vice president and Don Bethel treasurer. The board approved motel room tax plans and named multiple organizational changes to the chamber.
The United Way campaign has raised 49 percent of a 41 400 goal, with 20 362 50 collected by Friday afternoon. The Advance Division led by John Hegi is 74 percent toward 26 650, at 19 750 50. Events include a Nov 7 movie fundraiser, a Nov 27 Spanish Dance by the Mesa Lions Club, and the main Telethon on Nov 22. Chamber banquet tickets are on sale for Oct 20 at six dollars, featuring a year’s project review and humorist Dr Newberry with a country band.
Areas across the nation face mixed weather with persistent cold and drought. Production forecasts drop for Dawson County to about 170 000 bales from 200 000 while the 25 county region totals 1 712 600 bales due to severe weather, late crop maturity, and pests. Stronger demand and a slow economy recovery support prices as frost timing could alter yields.
Registration for a week of individualized art instruction by Walter Lengel runs Oct 27 to 31. Retail Trade Committee finalizes plans for the fourth annual Halloween Party and Parade on Oct 31 with a 5 p.m. parade from the courthouse lawn and a 6:30 p.m. costume contest at the National Guard Armory. Prizes in three categories for two age groups. Santa arrives Nov 29 with December square lighting and extended shopping hours through Dec 23.
Lamesa banks including First National Bank Lamesa National Bank Lamesa Federal Savings and Loan and Sentry Savings along with federal offices and the post office will be closed Monday for Columbus Day. Other agencies and businesses expect normal hours.
