Half the Dawson County cotton crop wiped out by a historic hail and flood event. County Agent Lee Roy Colgan reports Precinct Three devastated, with extensive damage across the Seminole Highway to Cedar Lake and Welch areas. Weather eased, but damage remains severe.
Dawson County commissioners prepare for an oil property value adjustment at the board of equalization meeting next Monday afternoon while weighing a three cent tax-rate cut for 1976 and a possible two cent raise for employees. The storm damage near Punkin Center devastates cotton crops and prompts a countywide hail and wind assessment.
The annual all day lawn and garden clinic will be held Monday at Forrest Park Community Center. Extension specialists lead sessions on color balanced landscaping, mini gardens, dish gardens, hanging baskets and terrariums with a lunch break and a landscape home tour. The event is co sponsored by local garden clubs and the Dawson County Extension Office. Registration starts at 9 30 a.m. and sessions run from 10 a.m. to 1 30 p.m.
Lamesa trustees opened bids on the Middle School repair project delaying acceptance for days and heard appraisal work is 90 to 95 percent complete. Bid from Joe Hensley of Lubbock was 59711 without alternates and a competing proposal from B R Cowin of Midland priced at cost plus 122 percent fee plus rentals. Snody Construction did not submit a bid. Trustees will confer with Hagg Consulting and Engineering before deciding, aiming for a special meeting later in the week. The appraisal field work nears completion and the 11 000 parcels will yield 100 percent value for district tax planning. The tax office has not yet received the new appraisal records.
Services for Rev Walter G Horn 68 longtime First Presbyterian minister were held at 10 am Tuesday with burial at Lamesa Memorial Park. Dr Guy Ranson Trinity University officiated. Horn died Sunday noon after weeks of illness. A native of Athens he lived in Lamesa 22 years and had pastored Tulsa and Paris churches. He helped found and led the Lamesa Memorial Day Care Center and chaired it since inception. He was a former Rotary Club president and remained active in the civic scene. See Horn Page 2.
