Hail Storm Wrecks 3000 Acres Of Cotton In Dawson County
A Saturday night hail storm cut a jagged path across about 6000 acres in Dawson County farms near Lamesa. Between 800 and 1000 acres west of Lamesa and in the Union area suffered severe damage while up to 1000 more acres in Higginbotham area were hurt. About 400 acres near three miles west of Lamesa were stripped. County Agent LeeRoy Colgan said roughly 3000 acres of cotton damaged, with up to 1000 left for peas, balance awaiting recovery outcomes. Up to an inch of rain accompanied the hail in the affected districts.

Local Boy Rescued From Caved In Well Near Home
Six year old Ray Stephens of Lamesa was rescued from a water well about 100 feet deep after nearly an hour trapped below ground. He was muddy and scratched but not seriously injured and taken to Medical Arts Hospital for examination. The abandoned well near 109 Maple Lane belonged to his parents, and rescuers suspected the hole had been caving in from below for some time. Ray remained calm and guided rescuers as a rope looped under his arms pulled him to the surface, declaring it was cold and wet down there with an “Un-Huh!” confirmation.

Dawson County Commissioners Court approved a new contract with the Texas Department of Public Welfare for participation in a state administered child welfare program. Andrews Auto Crash Injures Lamesa Men
A two car collision five miles east of Andrews on Lamesa Highway at 6 20 Monday morning sent three people to Permian General Hospital and others for treatment. Carl Foster Jackson of Andrews driver of a 1965 International Scout suffered painful shoulder and hip and was X-rayed. Billy B Griffin 34 of Lamesa driver of a 1964 Chevrolet was admitted with head, chest and mid back injuries and chest X-ray. Larry Griffin 18 and Billy Griffin of Lamesa were admitted for severe scalp laceration, right arm abrasion and left ankle injury with X rays. Dub McGill 23 of unspecified location had a small laceration and was not admitted.
