The Lamesa community celebrates Jubilee 75 with thousands of former residents returning. Exes arrived from Anchorage Seattle New Canaan Philadelphia Bowie Syracuse and San Francisco as the town totals registrations by Friday.
Lamesa school trustees set the property assessment at 50 percent for 1976, same as last year, with preliminary studies suggesting local revenue may rise by under 100000 next year. Tax rate to be decided in August. appraisals show land values rising two to two and a half times, while residential and business values vary. Trustees denied a 20 day extension for teacher contracts. 91 contracts still outstanding. A merit pay proposal for extracurricular staff was tabled.
O'Donnell opened its Fourth of July festival with a flag raising and ribbon cutting for the new O'Donnell Museum in Heritage Park. Clark's Rangers fired salutes with black powder rifles as Lamesa Police Chief Lee Bartlett gave a patriotic address. The old A.J. Warren building, now a museum, houses historic ties to the First National Bank of O'Donnell. A plaque will mark it a historic site. Mrs. Charles Long attended the ceremony, sole survivor of A.J. Warren.
Mike Schmidt organized a Dallas Fort Worth Mini Jubilee after not attending the 1975 Lamesa Jubilee. He gathered 250 to 300 ex-Lamesans from classes 1906 to 1968, sent invitations, and about 125 attended at 3111 Beverly, Dallas on June 25. Guests included Alan Bratcher, Faith Emory, Wanda Ross, Midge Baldwin, Gary Mitchell, Sherry Tomlinson, and others.
