The 1981 Dawson County cotton crop may soon surpass the all time high as 14 000 bales were ginned this week bringing the unofficial season total to 319 504 from 31 area gins. Final USDA totals come later though several gins have closed while larger operations plan to gin into March.
Police, armed with a search warrant, confiscated over 40 pounds of marijuana valued around 30000 at Lamesa Villa Apartment No 55. Julian Roy Weese, 29, was arrested on a possession charge. Municipal Court issued the warrant Thursday morning.
The Lamesa Industrial Foundation board of directors will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Reddy Room of Texas Electric Service Company to conduct their annual meeting. J D Dyer H M Stover and Nelson Hogg named as FOUNDATION P 2.

Former Judge R F Spraberry joins Mac Sellers Curtis Pruitt and Glenn White while Gerald Parson runs as Republican for County Judge. Denise Dyess challenges Barbara Stone for Treasurer and Abe Furlow battles Kenneth Pearson for Precinct Two. Other incumbents seek re-election in Democratic primary filings due by 6 p.m. February 1.
Fred Vera announced this week his bid for re election to the Dawson County Justice of the Peace post in the May 1 Democratic primary. He has served over three years since first being appointed in 1978 and elected in 1980 to fill an unexpired term. He thanked the people of Dawson County for their support and pledged to continue his work if re elected.
Denise Peterson Dyess announces candidacy for Dawson County Treasurer in the Democratic primary on May 1. A Dawson County native and 1964 Lamesa High School graduate, she states her qualifications and commitment, noting her husband Royce Dyess is a local arson investigator.
R F Spraberry, former Dawson County Judge, announces candidacy for county judge as a Democrat in the May 1 primary. A Dawson County native, he studied at Klondike and Lamesa High School, attended Texas Tech, Hardin-Simmons, and Oklahoma University, and served in World War II era War Manpower programs. He previously held the judge’s office in 1953-54 and 1959-62 and later ran an electrical business.
John T. Montford, the Lubbock County Criminal District Attorney for three years, announced at a Lubbock press conference that he will challenge incumbent State Senator E. L. Short for the 28th Sentorial District which includes Dawson County. He warned West Texas faces a vacuum in top legislative roles as it moves into the 1980s.
