Registration opens for spring classes at Lamesa Campus

Nine courses are listed for the Howard College Lamesa Campus spring term. Registration occurs Monday and Tuesday at 1810 Lubbock Highway with classes starting Wednesday and ending May 6. Courses include Freshman Composition with Susan King, U.S. History 1876 with Larry Reese, another U.S. History 1876 section with Larry Curry, Introduction to Psychology, Conversational Spanish, plus three business courses Applied Accounting, Beginning Typewriting, and Intermediate Typewriting all taught by Jim Pogue. An Occupational Criminal Procedure and Evidence course is taught by Gerry Brown.

Divorce rate gains ground on marriages

Dawson County records show births marriages and deaths declined slightly in 1982 from 1981 while divorces rose. District Court granted 82 divorces against 75 the year before, with 44 percent of county marriage licenses issued. In 1982 185 marriage licenses were issued versus 190 in 1981.

Oil and gas filings drop in Dawson County reports

County Clerk Billie Bingham reports 4,621 total filings in Dawson County in 1982, down from 5,077 in 1981, 5,477 in 1980, and 6,155 in 1979. The downturn marks at least a third consecutive year of declines across various document types.

Jury Duty Called for 150 Dawson County Residents

One hundred fifty Dawson County residents were summoned to report Monday afternoon for possible jury duty in cases to be heard this week in 106th State District Court. A full slate of criminal and civil matters is on the docket, though many may be postponed at 10 a.m. preliminary hearings.

Retired Medal of Honor recipient Roy Benavidez spoke to Lamesa students. Three people were indicted for the Refugio Castillo killing. Gomez Jr. and another Gomez were charged.

Year end permits boost city construction in 1982

City records show December activity pushed total 1982 building permits to 1 727 300, well below the 1980 and 1981 totals but boosted by seven December permits including 98 000 for Medical Arts Hospital remodeling funded by a 1 5 million bond. New homes and remodeling projects totaled 55 000 and 22 000 respectively with a 12 000 commercial remodel and a 10 000 relocated home.

Snow delays harvest as Dawson County cotton reaches 170 898 bales

Snow for two weeks leaves subsoil moisture favorable for next year's crop but halts harvest of the 1982 Dawson County cotton. Three gins finished ginning. others report under a dozen bales in the past week while awaiting dry fields. Press reports total bales ginned at 170 898, up 6 000 from last week, versus 289 000 by this time last year.
